Arsenal have turned their attention to John Stones after William Saliba’s back injury forced the Gunners to accelerate plans for defensive cover. The 32-year-old centre-back left Manchester City on a free transfer last month and can also slot in at right-back, making him a flexible option for Mikel Arteta’s side. Saliba is expected to miss several months with a back issue, but Arsenal confirmed on 15 July 2026 that he avoided surgery.

Why Stones fits Arsenal’s needs

Arsenal’s interest in Stones follows their failure to sign Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea this week. With Saliba sidelined, Arteta needs a first-team centre-back to anchor his back four. Stones, who made 36 Premier League appearances in the last three seasons, brings Champions League and World Cup experience-he featured in five of England’s eight games at the 2026 World Cup.

Yet Stones’ injury record remains a red flag. His Manchester City stint was repeatedly disrupted, and Arsenal already have younger cover in Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White and Jurrien Timber. Adding Stones would add steel, but his wages and fitness doubts make him a risk.

Arteta’s history with Stones

Mikel Arteta and John Stones go back to their Manchester City days. Arteta joined Pep Guardiola’s staff in 2016, months after Stones arrived from Everton, and stayed until 2020. Stones played regularly under Arteta’s guidance, and the manager has spoken highly of him. In 2020, Arteta said: “John is a player I really like. We followed him before we signed him when I was at City. I worked with him for many years.”

That familiarity could smooth a reunion. Stones can play centre-back or right-back, fitting Arsenal’s system, and his leadership would strengthen a defence that has conceded 27 goals so far this season.

Who else could step in?

Arsenal are also eyeing Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix. Konsa, 26, has started 31 of Villa’s 38 league games this season, while Lacroix, 23, has impressed for Palace with 34 appearances. Both are younger and arguably safer, but their fees may be steep.
