Arsenal have missed out on signing winger Malick Fofana after Crystal Palace moved to hijack his transfer from Lyon. The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Palace agreed a deal worth over €30 million (£25.7m) for the Belgian international, matching the terms Sunderland had reached before their move was intercepted.
Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, had explored a possible deal for the 21-year-old. James McNicholas of The Athletic noted that "Arsenal had explored a possible deal for Fofana, and a conversation took place between the player and Arteta." However, the club was ultimately unwilling to meet Lyon's asking price. This leaves Arsenal looking somewhat short on the left-hand side as the transfer window closes, having sold Leandro Trossard and with Gabriel Martinelli expected to depart. Their only attacking arrival so far this summer is Christos Tzolis.
Why did Arsenal pull out of the Fofana deal?
The primary reason Arsenal stepped back was financial. Lyon's valuation, exceeding €30 million including bonuses, was deemed too high for a player who would likely be a squad option. Fofana has recorded two goals in six appearances for Lyon this season and 19 in 83 total games over two-and-a-half years since his €17 million move from Gent.
