Arsenal teenager Max Dowman was sent off while playing for England Under-19s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against the USA this week. The 16-year-old forward received a red card in the 74th minute as England secured a 2-1 win at the Marbella Football Centre in Spain.
Dowman had earlier set up the opening goal for Reigan Heskey inside the first minute of the match. Luca Williams-Barnett also scored for Ben Futcher's side, who held on for victory despite finishing the game with ten men. The exact reason for the dismissal is unconfirmed, though to have been for a moment of petulance after a challenge.
The incident comes during a breakthrough season for the young Gunner. Dowman has already made two Premier League appearances for Mikel Arteta's first team this term, scoring twice. He found the net in the 4-2 win at Ipswich earlier this month. His rapid progress has not gone unnoticed by the national setup.
England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley has publicly discussed Dowman's potential pathway. "It's important that players develop at their own pace," Carsley said. "Max is an outstanding talent, the timing and the balance of when he comes to the U21s is inevitable."
Despite the setback, Dowman remains a regular part of Arsenal's senior squad as they chase the Premier League title. The club currently sits second in the table with 12 points from five games. England's Under-19s conclude their international break with a match against Belgium on Monday.
